Annapurna Circuit: Day 16 – Tatopani to Ghorepani.

Friday 29th December 2017.

After spending the last few days having an easy, relaxed trek along beautiful trails we weren’t exactly looking forward to the altitude gain we were to experience … going from 1,190m to 2,855m wasn’t going to be the highlight of today, but, hey ho, never mind, a hill is a hill and they need to be climbed to get the best views and this was our last major hill of the entire trek “Up, Up, Up”.

The trail was due to climb all day passing through Ghara, Shika and Chitre then to Ghorepani (you quickly find out why many trekkers end their trek at Tatopani, opting instead to get a bus to Pokhara).

From Chitre we enter a huge rhododendron forest and the last couple of hours take us up to Ghorepani (2874m/9429 ft). Ghorepani means ‘horse water’ and was a stopping place for the huge mule trains that used to ply this route

Out of the valley we started to trek higher straight away…

Up dusty roads and along trails…

past small hamlets and terraced fields…

and more “Up, up, up”…

The mountains were peaking over the top of the hills…

Ghorepani was getting ever closer, the signs told us so…

Until finally we saw the gate to the town and thought “It’s over, we’re here”

…which was an absolute LIE. After this gate there was another 20 minutes of nothing but steps…

Eventually we reached the highest lodge in the village…

and all that hard effort, concern, knee breaking steps, altitude gain was forgotten for these sights of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri Range:

I vowed never to complain about going up a hill to see a view like this again…
